The getting ready portion of your wedding day sets the tone — not just for the photos, but for how calm and present you feel as everything begins. And while it might seem simple (wake up, get dressed, done), there are a few things that make a huge difference.
Here’s what we always suggest to help the morning go smoother — with less chaos, better light, and more time for you to breathe.
1. Choose Your Getting Ready Space Intentionally
Natural light makes a big difference for both makeup and photos. Choose a space with windows, neutral walls (if possible), and enough room for your crew, vendors, and snacks. Hotel suites, Airbnbs, or even a quiet venue room with windows can all work.
2. Keep It Tidy (or at Least Contained)
You don’t need to clean obsessively, but try to keep clutter (bags, food, packaging) off beds or window areas. Designate one zone for photos — a corner with natural light is ideal — and another for the chaos. It saves editing time later and makes your photos look way more polished.
3. All the Details in One Place
Before your photographer arrives, gather your:
- Rings (all of them)
- Dress or suit + hanger
- Shoes
- Invitation suite
- Jewelry
- Vow books
- Any heirlooms or keepsakes
Having it ready lets us start shooting right away while you’re still in glam, and ensures nothing gets missed.
4. Plan Extra Time — Then Add 30 Minutes
Hair and makeup always take longer than expected, especially with a big group. And delays early in the day ripple into everything else.
Build in buffer time before you need to leave for portraits or the ceremony — even just 20–30 minutes of breathing room can save a lot of stress.
5. Designate a Point Person
You shouldn’t be the one answering vendor calls, fielding questions, or looking for Uncle Dave’s boutonniere. Assign a planner, MOH, or trusted friend to be the go-to person so you can actually enjoy your morning.
6. Eat Something. Drink Water. Sit Down.
It sounds obvious, but so many couples forget. You’ll need energy, especially if you’re not eating again for hours. Hydration helps with stress, your skin, and keeping your makeup looking fresh.
7. Let the Morning Be the Morning
We’ve photographed getting ready moments full of tears, dance parties, quiet reflection, total chaos, and everything in between. Let the morning unfold the way it needs to.
The goal isn’t to control the energy — it’s to make space for it. You’ll remember how it felt, and that’s what makes the photos mean something.
TL;DR:
The getting ready portion isn’t just logistics — it’s a part of the story. Choosing the right space, prepping your details, and giving yourself time can completely shift how you experience the whole day.
Plan well. Then let go a little. We’ll handle the rest.
